Since 1958, this orchestra has been more than an ensemble. It has been a musical home, a place where volunteer musicians, audiences, families, and friends come together through the shared experience of live symphonic music.
Over the years, the organization has grown and changed, but its purpose has remained steady: to make music accessible, to serve the community, and to create meaningful connections through performance, education, and collaboration.
Our name has changed before as the orchestra has grown. Originally known as the Atlanta Community Orchestra, the ensemble became the Atlanta Community Symphony Orchestra in 2001 to more clearly reflect its identity as a symphonic orchestra. That change was not about leaving anything behind. It was about clarity.
Today, we continue that story as the Atlanta Metropolitan Symphony.
This new name reflects the breadth of the communities we serve across metro Atlanta and the growing role we play through free concerts, educational programs, community partnerships, and artistic collaboration. It helps us communicate who we are now while honoring everything that brought us here.
The spirit of community remains central to the orchestra — within our musicians, in our audiences, and throughout the neighborhoods and partnerships we continue to build.
